We are honored to welcome Dan Bowling, Ph.D. to the Songs of Love Foundation Advisory Board as we continue to expand our mission to bring the healing power of music to seniors and individuals facing emotional and cognitive challenges.

Dr. Bowling is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford School of Medicine and directs the Music, Brain, and Health Lab within Stanford Psychiatry’s Division of Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences. His groundbreaking translational research explores how music affects the brain, with the goal of developing new approaches to health and wellness—particularly in the areas of anxiety and depression.

Trained in neuroscience, evolutionary biology, and psychiatry, Dr. Bowling’s work places music squarely within human biology, creating a scientific foundation for medical and therapeutic applications. He earned his PhD in Neurobiology from Duke University and holds graduate certificates in Cognitive Neuroscience and Translational Medicine. Prior to his faculty appointment at Stanford, he completed postdoctoral research at the University of Vienna and later served as an instructor in psychiatry at Stanford.

As Songs of Love Foundation grows its focus on seniors—particularly those experiencing memory loss, isolation, anxiety, or depression—Dr. Bowling’s expertise brings invaluable insight. His research directly aligns with our belief that personalized music is not only emotionally meaningful, but also biologically powerful. His guidance will help inform how we thoughtfully expand our programs, deepen our impact, and continue to ground our work in both compassion and science.

Beyond his academic and clinical contributions, Dr. Bowling is a husband and father who enjoys the outdoors, natural history, and—of course—making and listening to music. His personal connection to music as a fundamental part of human life mirrors the heart of our mission.

We are deeply grateful to welcome Dr. Bowling to our advisory board and look forward to working together as we continue our pursuit of using music to comfort, connect, and uplift seniors and families through every stage of life.
