Imagine hearing a song written just for you — one that says your name, tells your story, and reminds you that you are loved. For children facing serious illness, that experience can be life-changing. The Songs of Love Foundation has been making those moments possible for more than 25 years, providing free personalized songs to children and teens coping with illness, trauma, and other hardships across the United States.
In this post, we’ll walk you through what Songs of Love does, why personalized songs matter so deeply, and how you can play a part in bringing music to a child who needs it.
What Is the Songs of Love Foundation?
Songs of Love is a nonprofit organization based in the United States with a singular, beautiful mission: to uplift the spirits of children and teens facing serious medical, physical, or emotional challenges by creating free, personalized songs just for them.
Each song is crafted by a professional singer-songwriter and tailored entirely to the child — their name, their favorite things, their personality, the people they love. No two songs are ever the same.
To date, Songs of Love has created more than 49,000 personalized songs for children across the country, working with hospitals, hospices, rehabilitation centers, and families to reach kids at their most vulnerable moments.
Why Personalized Songs Make a Difference
Music has long been recognized for its therapeutic power. Research from institutions like the American Music Therapy Association shows that music can reduce anxiety, ease pain, and improve emotional well-being — particularly in children dealing with chronic or life-threatening illness.
But personalized songs go a step further. When a child hears their own name in a melody — their hobbies, their dog’s name, their favorite color — it sends a powerful message: I see you. You matter.
That kind of recognition can:
• Reduce feelings of isolation during long hospital stays
• Provide emotional comfort during painful or frightening procedures
• Strengthen the bond between a child and their caregivers
• Give a child something joyful to hold onto during difficult days
• Leave a lasting memory for families, especially in end-of-life situations
For many families, the song becomes a treasure — something they play on birthdays, during treatments, or simply on hard days when they need a reminder of love.
How the Song Request Process Works
Requesting a personalized song through Songs of Love is simple, and it is completely free to families. Here’s how it works:
• A parent, guardian, healthcare provider, or social worker submits a request online with details about the child — their name, age, interests, favorite things, and any special details that make them unique.
• A professional songwriter from the Songs of Love network receives the request and gets to work crafting an original song just for that child.
• The finished song is delivered to the family, typically within a few weeks.
• The child receives their very own piece of music — recorded, professional, and made entirely for them.
Songs are available to children and teens ages 3–21 who are facing illness, disability, or emotional hardship. Requests can be submitted by clicking here to request a personalized song — at no cost to the family.
Who Can Request a Song?
Personalized songs from Songs of Love are available to any child or teen between the ages of 3 and 21 who is dealing with:
• Cancer or other serious or chronic illness
• Physical disabilities or developmental challenges
• Emotional trauma or mental health crises
• Hospice or end-of-life care
• Other significant hardships that affect their daily well-being
Requests are accepted from families, healthcare professionals, social workers, child life specialists, and others who work with children in need. There is no cost — ever.
Introducing the Memory Initiative: Personalized Songs for Seniors
About a year ago, Songs of Love expanded its mission in a meaningful new direction. Through the Memory Initiative, the Foundation now creates personalized songs for seniors living with dementia and other memory-related conditions.
Music has a remarkable relationship with memory. Research has shown that even individuals in advanced stages of dementia can respond powerfully to familiar melodies — often recalling emotions, people, and moments that other forms of communication can no longer reach. A personalized song, rooted in a senior’s own life story, can spark recognition, reduce agitation, and bring moments of genuine joy and connection.
Through the Memory Initiative, families and caregivers can request a song that reflects a senior’s life — their name, their history, the music they grew up with, the people they love. Just like Songs of Love’s work with children, these songs are created by professional songwriters and provided completely free of charge.
It’s a natural extension of everything Songs of Love stands for: using the power of personalized music to reach people at their most vulnerable, and reminding them — no matter their age — that their story matters.
How You Can Help
Every personalized song costs approximately $75 to produce — covering the time and talent of professional songwriters who volunteer their hearts as much as their skills. Songs of Love relies entirely on donations and supporters to keep every song free for families.

A Song Is More Than Music
For a child lying in a hospital bed, facing a diagnosis that is hard to understand, the world can feel isolating and overwhelming. A personalized song won’t change the diagnosis — but it can change how that child feels about themselves in a moment that matters deeply.
It says: your story is worth telling. Your life is worth celebrating. You are not alone.
That is the mission of Songs of Love — and with your help, it’s a mission that can reach every child who needs it.
